Italia, bella Italia and an essay about Languages

No aspiro a dominar moltes llengües a la perfecció, sinó a parlar-ne i entendre’n quantes més millor. Català, castellà, anglès, francès, alemany i, ara, italià.

PUNT I A PART

Arrivederci! 😉

ENGLISH VERSION

Yesterday, 26th September, it was the European day of Languages, whose main aim was to promote the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe. This will be without question one of the main points for the future and the development of the EU.

I’m 23 and I feel lucky for being multilingual. I don’t pretend knowing perfectly all the languages in the world, but would like to learn (at least be capable of talk and understand) as many as possible. Catalan, Spanish, English, French, German and now Italian. Yesterday, on the Language Day (maybe a coincidence… maybe not) I finally was accepted at the Language Official School to start next Tueday the first level of Italian 🙂

Twenty years ago it was unthinkable that normal people could ever learn so many languages. In fact, some of you will agree when I say that our parents can basically talk in Spanish (Catalan, also for ours) and maybe English. Nowadays, many of us can speak in Sapnish, English and even another language. It may be thanks to the LowCost flying companies or the summer camps and Erasmus we did or may be thanks to the huge range of TV series and movies that come from abroad, but the fact is that every day, more and more, we are able to learn and speak more languages. I ask myself wether my kids’ neurons will be able to learn 10 languages without being translators in the UN…

What I find the most exciting is the cultural mix we have nowadays. In Paris we realised that more and more couples that come together are immigrants (one from here the other one from there) and the son is born in the land they are living in, taking with him the other two cultures. I’m really proud of this new lifestyle ^.^ I really love it. I’d like to think that these kids will grow up being French (for example) and will be capable of combinating their cultural heritage and never put it aside.

In a moment where we’re building Europe, it has no sense to be closed up in only one culture, your’s or not. I don’t understand why governments promote education, culture and languages, and they end up prohibiting those languages, wrongly known as «dialects» or «minorities». Anyway, let’s forget it before we start up a new political conversation.

FULL STOP

Soon I’ll start to know something else about italian people but than they make pizzas and spaguetti (prejudices were never good). For the moment, I’ll have to content myself by seeing them in their own habitat ^.^ Oh, bella Italia! On Saturday Arnau and I are going to Rome 🙂 It will be a quick visit but enough to fall in love again with that «kneaded» and «tomated» culture, that so much pleasure brings to my palate.

Arrivederci! 😉
